Does Medicaid Pay for Home Health Care in New Jersey?
Home care is often one of the best options for senior citizens, but it can be an expensive burden if your insurance or Medicaid will not pay for it. Typically, senior home care in New Jersey cost more than the national average. Fortunately, Medicaid will pay for home care in certain situations so it is important to know when and how this can be done. While it is possible for Medicaid to pay for home care, it often isn’t as great as you might hope for. In most cases, Medicaid will only pay for around 25 hours a week of home care. Sometimes, this number may increase to 40 hours per week, but the system put in place to determine how many hours of home care a senior needs often underestimates the true need. There are currently several requests to change this so that more seniors in New Jersey can benefit from home health care rather than having to move into a nursing home, but currently, it can be very challenging to arrange for Medicaid to pay for or even partially fund home care. The short answer is that yes, Medicaid can and will pay for some home care. Unfortunately, the amount of home care they will pay for is often much less than a senior actually needs. This can make it hard for other caregivers or family members to work during the week.

Benefits of Senior Home Care
There are many reasons why someone may choose to go with in home care instead of a nursing home. With so many benefits to help seniors in NJ, it’s easy to see why someone would make arrangements for a live-in caregiver rather than sending their loved one to a nursing home.
1. Familiar Environment
When you choose in home care, your loved one is able to remain in their own home where things are familiar to them. This can be especially important to those that suffer from memory disorders and find it hard to orient themselves. Moving them to a nursing home facility may be stressful or frustrating for them whereas having someone live with them and provide daily care is easier on them.
2. Independence
Getting older doesn’t need to mean you have to lose your independence. For seniors who are still able to live fairly independently, having a home caregiver allows them to keep their independence while still benefiting from help when they need it. For example, a caregiver may show up to take them grocery shopping or help them get dressed in the mornings. Another main reason for people hiring in home care assistance is to help take their seniors to medical appointments. During the rest of the day, your senior is able to maintain their independence.
3. Personal, Expert Care
Home care is personalized to a senior’s specific needs. If your senior has certain needs, a caregiver will be able to ensure they’re taken care of in the way they need to be. This can mean anything from meals being cooked specially to providing regular companionship.
4. Peace of Mind for the Entire Family
Taking on the daily task of caring for your senior family member can be extremely stressful for the entire family. In home care services will take on that load from you and you can rest easy, knowing that your loved one is receiving excellent and compassionate assistance with their daily living activities like their meal preparation and other individual needs.

questions
What is home health care?
It’s a basic question, but a good one to ask! Home health care includes a wide range of health care services provided in the patient’s home. It’s all about maintaining the best level of care, comfort and quality of life. Home health care is a team effort, including the family, physician and home care team. It’s definitely a cost-effective alternative to extended hospitalization, rehabilitation or nursing home. Patients are almost always more comfortable in their own home. Studies have shown that patients recover more quickly at home — and that is good for everyone involved.
What is a Home Health Aide and what can they do?
In New Jersey, a Home Health Aide is trained and certified through the New Jersey Board of Nursing. The aide, better known as the caregiver, provides personal care services to patients that can no longer take care of themselves. Some of the help they provide includes bathing, toileting, transferring, cooking, light housekeeping, and medication reminders.

Does insurance cover the cost?
Again, that’s a good question to ask. If you have long-term care insurance, then yes, you are covered. In some cases, Medicare provides a little assistance. It is important to know how the care will be paid for before you get started. Thankfully there are a range of options that can help pave the way, including:
• Private insurance such as life insurance and long-term care insurance
• Public programs including Medicaid and Veterans benefits
• Collective sibling agreements, annuities, and reverse mortgages. (A collective sibling agreement means whoever covers the care costs will be reimbursed from the parent’s estate.)
